Obituary for Joseph Michael Juhas

Print
Joseph Michael Juhas of Litchfield died on Wednesday night of heart failure at Hartford Hospital. He was 74 years old.

In recent years, Mr. Juhas suffered from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Juhas was born in Torrington, Connecticut on November 22, 1944 to Joseph and Ethel Juhas. The eldest of five children, he excelled academically at school in Torrington and at The Gunnery School in Washington, Connecticut. He was the first member of his family to go to college, and graduated with honors from Harvard College, where he studied government and rowed for the varsity crew team, and later from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. While in law school he married Nancy Poor; they had one child, and later divorced.

Mr. Juhas practiced law in New York at the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and later in Washington at the U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation. In 1982, he founded a boutique investment banking firm which advised the U.S. Navy on lease financing for ships. In 1987, Mr. Juhas joined the New York law firm Dewey Ballantine as a partner and later opened the firm’s office in Hong Kong, where he lived for five years before returning to New York.

In 2004 Mr. Juhas moved to Litchfield, where he had owned a house since the early 1990s. In 2007, he married Terry Josephine Hopkins, of Washington, D.C., whom he had first met in the late 1970s and reconnected with over twenty years later.

Mr. Juhas will be remembered by his family and friends for his intellect and his curiosity, his humor, his love of reading and politics, his ambitious home improvement projects and his devotion to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Hopkins; his sisters Kathleen Taylor of West Dennis, Massachusetts and Barbara Walsh of Madison, Wisconsin; his brothers Philip Juhas of Bethlehem, Connecticut and James Juhas of Cheshire, Connecticut; his son Peter Lyon Juhas of Dublin, Ireland; and his three grandchildren, Peter Lyon Juhas, Jr., Charles McCabe Juhas and Oliver Poor Juhas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, in Litchfield, burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, with a reception to follow. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Gunnery School, 22 Kirby Rd, Washington, CT 06793.
