Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather

Torrington- August J. Matteis, 88, of Torrington passed away on Friday June 23, 2017 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital surrounded by his family. August was born on June 19, 1929 in Castelvetere sul Calore, Italy to the late Giovanni and Virginia (D’Angelis) Matteis. He was the husband of Marie DelVaglio Matteis for 64 years.

August came to the states in 1953, residing in Stamford, Connecticut where he was a builder. He and his family moved to Bantam Lake in 1970 where he continued to work as a Master Carpenter and also owned apartment buildings. August enjoyed building houses and doing other projects for his family. He also enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Marie, August is survived by four children; John Matteis and his wife Lori of Prospect, Mary-Grace “Tina” Hanusch and her husband Richard of Torrington, Virginia Giaver and her husband Ian of Torrington and August Matteis, Jr. and his wife Pamira of Great Falls, VA, ten grandchildren; Mindy, Paul, Samantha, John Dino, Daniel, Kate, Michelle, AJ, Jaya and Milan, two great grandchildren; Dylan and Chiarina and many nieces and nephews. August was predeceased by three brothers; Salvatore, Rudolfo and Luigi and his two sisters; Attilia and Clementina.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Church, 107 East Main Street, Torrington, CT 06790. Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 5:00-9:00pm at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, CT 06759. Private burial will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
