Obituary for Marjorie Virginia Munson

Print
Marjorie V. (Marge) Munson of Morris, Connecticut - optimist, lover of life, and inspiration – died peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday, November 28th at 1:26 pm. She was surrounded by loving family at the home of Dawn and Frank Silano of Litchfield, Connecticut. Mrs. Munson, beloved wife of Edwin P. Munson, Sr. (deceased 2006), mother of six, teacher, entrepreneur, world traveler, and friend to many, was just two weeks shy of her 96th birthday.

Born in Ozone Park, Queens, New York on December 12, 1922 to Maude (McKeon) Olson and William Olson, who had a column at the New York Sun, the family moved to New Preston, Connecticut when she was 14. At 16, she met her future husband, Edwin P. Munson, and the couple married when she was 17 years-old. In the early years of their marriage, Marge sang with her husband’s band, Pop Benson and the Cornhuskers, holding a regular spot on local radio as “the girl with the golden voice”

Eventually, Marge and Ed bought, moved and refurbished a colonial house built in 1769 in East Morris. Ed built a gasoline/service station where the house had originally stood, at the corner of Route 109 and 63. The couple had six children, four of whom survive her. (One child, Christine, died as an infant. Their second son, Ed Munson, Jr., a beloved coach and teacher, died in 2005 at the age of 63. Marjorie was also pre-deceased by her sweet grandson, Eric Silano, who succumbed to leukemia at age seven.)

A wonderful homemaker and mother, Marjorie also took on a job at the James Morris elementary school when her youngest child went to school. She worked as a secretary there, and later, she worked at Wamogo high school as a teacher’s aide in the home economics department where she was loved and admired by all.

She also had a career raising St. Bernard puppies for several years.

At a time when most would be considering retirement, Marjorie instead became an entrepreneur in her late 50s. The Munsons moved a barn on their property, and The Fabric Barn and Cardinal Craft Shop was born. For twenty years, she worked tirelessly as owner, manager, and buyer. The store became a gathering place for people from all over.

Marjorie was also a member of the Waterbury Chorale and traveled the world singing in the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, and finally in Turkey in 2000 at the age of 78. In Poland, she had the unique opportunity to shake hands with Lech Walesa, President of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
In addition, she was an avid cross-country skier well into her 70s. She walked two miles a day until she was 89.

After closing her store, Marjorie, still energetic and strong, found a part-time job at the Morris Senior Center where she worked for several years until she reluctantly retired at the age of 93.

Marjorie is survived by four children, Arthur (Art), Dean, Dawn, and Scott, as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Monday, December 3rd from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Rd, Litchfield, CT 06759. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, In Memory of Marjorie Munson, may be made to Morris Public Library, 4 North Street, Morris, CT 06763.
