Obituary for Charles Gilbert Yard III

Charles Gilbert Yard III
Charles "Chuck" Yard, III, passed away unexpectedly on May 20, 2016. Chuck was born in Litchfield on July 4, 1985 and raised in Norfolk, graduating from Northwestern Regional High School #7, and then attending Dean College.

Chuck was larger than life - not only physically, but also in spirit. He had an infectious smile and a wicked sense of humor. He was incredibly funny, a bit of a prankster, and a charmer, but he also had a heart of gold. And he had a love and sensitivity for animals big and small, especially his family dogs.

Chuck took pride in his work, and was a skilled craftsmen. He grew up building canoes, and was employed at Farmington Woods as a carpenter.

When he wasn't wearing a tool belt, Chuck was in the gym, on the golf course, fishing or riding his Harley. He was blessed with many friends, and was a loyal friend in return. He spoke fondly of his gym buddies, colleagues and the many people who helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Chuck was always honest about his struggles with addiction. He fought valiantly, and found strength and pride in working with the McCall Center for Behavioral Health, not only to work on his own recovery, but also to help others in need.

After suffering from some health problems, one tragic misstep resulted in his passing. Sadly, it is all too common that a single act of use can be fatal following a long period of sobriety. We are forever grateful for the time that we spent with him and the life and love that he shared with us. He will be sorely missed.

Chuck loved his sisters, Mary and Sarah, and always let them know it, usually through teasing them relentlessly. Often a co-conspirator, he had a brother and good friend in Mary's spouse, Nicholas Ouellette. He was adored by his parents, Charles and Tara Yard. He leaves behind his Uncles and Aunts Craig and Shari Yard (Litchfield), Brian Yard (Roxbury), Lynn Frazier (Austin, Texas), Dennis and Diane Hayes (Hemlock, New York) and Bridget Hayes (Sarasota, Florida). And his cousins Kailyn and Jillian Yard, Erica Yard and Callum and Stuart Hayes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the McCall Center for Behavioral Health, 58 High Street, Torrington, CT 06790, to help others in need.

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 9:30-11:00am at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. A funeral service will begin at 11:00am. Burial will follow in East Cemetery, Litchfield.
