Obituary for Charles Gilbert Yard Sr.

Charles Gilbert Yard, Sr., 89, passed away on Sunday, November 16, after a brave battle with cancer.

Charles was born July 8, 1925, in Hamilton Square, NJ, to the late David H. Yard, Sr., and Rebecca Thompson Yard.

In 1943, Charles volunteered for the US Navy. He worked as a motor machinist onboard LST 544 until his discharge in 1946. He had lifetime memberships with the American Legion and VFW. Charles refused to live in a home without an American flag flying.

Following WWII, he moved to Connecticut, with his brother, David. He worked at Warren MacArthur in Bantam and later partnered and founded Light Metals Coloring Company in Southington, CT.

Charles married the love of his life, Agnes Craig, in 1957. They grew roots in Litchfield and raised four children.

Charles and Agnes took an early retirement in 1986 & relocated to South Florida. Charles became an avid golfer for more than 20 years.

Charles loved and surrounded himself with his family, surfing the internet, watching sports with his sons, and enjoyed a cold beer.

Charles was predeceased by his wife, Agnes. He is survived by three sons, Charles Jr. (Tara) of Norfolk, Craig (Shari) of Litchfield, & Brian (Tina) of Roxbury; one daughter, Lynn Frazier (Brent) of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Mary, Charles III, Sarah, Kailyn, Jillian, Erica & Asia. He is also survived by his younger brother, Richard (Shirley) of Doylestown, PA, one brother-in-law, Lawrence (Mamie) Craig of Danbury, CT, and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, David H. Yard, Jr., and sisters, Margaret Miller, and Sarah Adamek.

Friends and family may call on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Rd., Litchfield. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery.
