The eldest of five children, he excelled academically at school in Torrington and at The Gunnery School in Washington, Connecticut. He was the first member of his family to go to college, and graduated with honors from Harvard College, where he studied government and rowed for the varsity crew team, and later from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Mr. Juhas practiced law in New York at the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and later in Washington at the U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation. In 1982, he founded a boutique investment banking firm which advised the U.S. Navy on lease financing for ships. In 1987, Mr. Juhas joined the New York law firm Dewey Ballantine as a partner and later opened the firm’s office in Hong Kong, where he lived for five years before returning to New York.

In 2004 Mr. Juhas moved to Litchfield, where he had owned a house since the early 1990s. In 2007, he married Terry Josephine Hopkins, of Washington, D.C., whom he had first met in the late 1970s and reconnected with over twenty years later.
