Obituary for Eileen M. Field

Eileen M. Field
b. 2/3/1932 d. 10/18/2018

The family of Eileen M. Field (Mrs. John H. Field) sadly announces her passing on Thursday in Litchfield, CT after a long illness with pneumonia and its complications. She died peacefully in the presence of her devoted husband of 56 years and three children: Thomas, a resident of New Hartford, CT; Douglas, of Los Gatos, CA; and Jennifer, of Staten Island, NY. She had five much-beloved grandchildren and is survived by a sister, Nancy Lince, of Charleston, WV.

Eileen was born in Omaha, NE, the daughter of Vivian and Paul Miller of Charleston, WV. After studying Art and Music at the University of Kentucky and Morris Harvey College in Charleston, she joined the staff of the Charleston Daily Mail as an advertising design artist, eventually becoming Food Editor with weekly publications under the header ‘Cooking Is My Dish’.

Her music and artistic interests and those of her future husband converged when both spent several years participating in the Charleston Light Opera Guild and its productions. They were married in Paris, Kentucky in 1962. Shortly after, they moved to Victoria, TX where Tom was born and subsequently to Dickinson, TX where Doug was born. And Eileen had morphed into a new career as a fulltime Mom, homemaker, and husband career supporter.

Shortly after additional moves to Indiana, and Toronto, Jennifer joined the family from Korea at age 2½, and in 1975, they returned to Connecticut where they settled in New Canaan. As her children matured, Eileen turned again to her love for music and the arts. She was a performing member of the Darien (CT) Duo Piano Concert group, and opened a new business in New Canaan (Featheridge Designs) to supply designs (her own and others) for needlepoint and knitting. She and her husband joined the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York City. After moving again to Washington (CT), she opened a second shop for Featheridge Designs and became an active member of the Washington Art Association and the Gunn Memorial Library through her declining years. Her wry good humor and devotion to her family, friends and community will be missed. She will ultimately rest with her husband in his family cemetery in Versailles (KY).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Gunn Library or the Washington Art Association.
