Obituary for Peter Andrew Sandrib

Peter Andrew Sandrib
Harwinton - Peter Andrew Sandrib, 87, died peacefully at home on May 7, 2018. Pete was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Nikolai and Gerda Sandrib. Leaving high school to join the U.S. Navy, Pete served on the USS Missouri, and Rhine River Patrol before and during the Korean War. He met his wife Gerd in Brooklyn, and they remained married for 62 years until Gerd’s death last year. After living in Franklin Square, N.Y., and raising their two children, Pete and Gerd moved to Harwinton after retirement. There Pete enjoyed doing yard work, renovating his house, and helping others. Pete was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 926 in New York City. He was a union advocate, and defender of the rights of the working class. Some construction highlights included working on the New York World’s Fair, and the Yankee Stadium renovation. Pete was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and participated as an usher, greeter and member of the building committee. For many years Pete volunteered at the soup kitchen at Trinity Episcopal Church in Torrington. Pete was a man who enjoyed working with his hands, and always lent those hands to help others. His famous line throughout his life, even after dementia devastated his mind was “do you need any help?” His biggest gift to his loved ones was allowing them to care for him at the end of his life. Predeceased by his wife Gerd, Pete is survived by his son, Richard and his wife Jeanne (Litchfield), his daughter June Murli, (Simsbury), and six grandchildren, Peter, Brian, Eric and Meghan Sandrib, and Robert and Craig Murli. He is also survived by sister Edith (Fred) Olsen, and brother Norman, and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Litchfield Hills Home Care, and to Eileen, Sue, Marlene and Marion for the special care they provided as Pete lived the end of his life at his home. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 837 Charles St. Torrington on Friday, May 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, 76 Walnut St. Torrington. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation as a tribute to Pete’s life.
