Obituary for Edith B. Siegel

New Hartford - Edith Bartel Siegel passed peacefully on January 5th at her home in New Hartford. She was born September 6, 1923 in Torrington, the daughter of the late Alfred F. and Florence (Wilcox) Bartel.

Edith attended Torrington schools and graduated from Torrington High School in 1940. She married Joseph Siegel who operated a pharmacy on Main Street in Torrington while she manned the office of the local Chamber of Commerce. Together they actively contributed to the life and activities of downtown Torrington. She was active in expanding roles of school events, a Girl Scout leader, Calvary Baptist Church, Jr Women’s Club, Beta Sigma Phi, The Torrington Bridge Club, and service organizations

After a move to New Hartford and the death of her beloved husband, she continued her education and began a career in the Central Office of the Commission for Higher Education, later with the State Technical Colleges and then with the Community Colleges. Upon retirement she joined friends for travel throughout the United States and many other countries.

Though she enjoyed reading and playing bridge, she vigorously pursued outdoor activities, hiking on many of Connecticut’s marked trails, gardening, arranging flowers, in addition to entertaining friends and family, and caring for the many animals that entered her life.

She is survived by her daughters, Christine Siegel of New Hartford and Saralyn and husband Barry Neff, two granddaughters Cordelia and Adrienne, nephews Todd and wife Janice Nelson, Duane and wife Alberta Nelson, nieces Karen and husband Dennis Dellaghelfa and, Beth and husband Alan Costa and nephew Edmond Bartell. Her brother Alfred Bartell and his wife Shirley predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at the chapel at Hillside Cemetery, 76 Walnut Street, Torrington, CT at 2 P.M., Thursday, January 11th.
