Obituary for Sallie L. Smith

Sallie Lamphier Smith
Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother

Litchfield - Sallie Lamphier Smith, 81, formerly of Brush Hill Road, died on August 28, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Edward G. and Ruth (Scoville) Lamphier. She was raised and educated in Torrington, CT. Following graduation from high school, Sallie worked as a telephone operator for SNET in Torrington and Hartford. She was also cashier and cook for the Litchfield school lunch program while her children attended school, and later she was the night auditor at the Litchfield Inn. She enjoyed volunteering, and was secretary and treasurer during her time as a member of the Junior Women’s Club in Litchfield. Sallie also served her community by helping people prepare their income taxes at local libraries. She was a proud member of the Connecticut State Grange # 107 in Litchfield.

Sallie was accomplished in cross-stitching and loved to read mysteries. Her favorite activities included attending musicals at theaters throughout the state, an interest she shared with many members of her extended family; and eating out with family and friends. Sallie will be greatly missed by her entire extended family and especially her great-grandchildren, all of whom dearly loved their “Gigi”. Sallie is survived by her four children and their spouses, Debra (Mrs James) Berry of Thomaston, Gerald Smith of Northfield, James and his wife Mary Lou Smith of Baltic, Jeffrey and his wife Kathy Smith of Canton, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and a sister, Alcibeth Barney of Litchfield. She is predeceased by her husband Gerald R. Smith Sr. and a sister, Kathleen Hawley.

She will be laid to rest privately with her husband in Bantam Cemetery, Bantam. In lieu of flowers, Sallie asks that her family and friends support their local theater by attending a play or making a memorial contribution.
