Carol Marie Whitney
Dr. Carol Marie Whitney
Loving mother, artist, author, and career professional

Torrington – Dr. Carol Marie Whitney, 71, passed away on July 26, 2017. She was born on March 31, 1946 to the late Emily May (Orr) and Charles Lester Whitney. She leaves behind her daughter, Lydia, and son-in-law, Thomas.

Carol was a registered representative with over 41 years in the brokerage industry. Most recently, she was a Senior Vice President of Investments at Buell Securities Corp. In addition to being a loving mother, she was a published author, an internationally-exhibited artist and had a great many other interests and passions.

Carol was raised in Washington, Connecticut, and education was a lifelong pursuit. She attended Washington Primary School and Washington High School before heading off to college at Wells College in Aurora, New York. There she earned her bachelor’s in French with a minor in Russian in 1968. In 1971, she was 5thyear certified at Southern Connecticut State College, and in 1976, she earned her post graduate at New York Institute of Finance. She had two master’s degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Master of Science in Management, 1992, and Master of Business Administration in International Management, 1997). Her Doctorate was in Organization and Management with a concentration in Leadership from Capella University and she had an Honorary Doctorate from Cambridge University in England.

As mention above, Carol’s work career was predominantly in the financial sector, though she was involved in many other endeavors as well. Prior to her career in finance, Carol worked as a journalist with Housatonic Valley Publications and as an advertising representative with Berkshire Eagle Publications. Her brokerage career started in 1976 and she has worked for several firms including Blyth-Eastman Dillon, Bache Halsey-Stuart Shields, Advest, Inc., E.T. Andrews & Company, Inc., and for the past 2.5 decades at Buell Securities Corp. She has been a licensee for selling insurance (fixed, variable, life and health) for various companies, since 1977. She acted as Secretary for the International Association for Finance Planning, Hartford, 1982-1983; Public Relations, 1983-1985; and Ethics Chairperson, 1985-1986.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, serving as a past worthy Matron for the Ephraim Kirby Chapter, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; National Association of Social Services, and Scottish Foundation.

In addition to her many other interests, Carol founded the Lydia Whitney Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization for arts and culture. Most notably, she organized a grass-roots effort to bring the Russian pianist and composer Guennady Vavilov from Pertrozavodsk, Russia, to the United States to play at several venues including The Bushnell. The concerts were a wild success and many were impressed with the maestro’s passion and skill with the piano.

Carol’s artistic and creative tendencies were seen in everything from her paintings, poetry, and books to the colorful fish-shaped handbag that she carried with her everywhere. She was always involved in at least one or two exciting and interesting projects and surrounded by intelligent and unique individuals.
