Obituary for Donald Richard Matson

Donald Richard Matson
KENT

Donald Richard Matson, 52, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Kent on May 31, 2017. Born October 6, 1964 in Holyoke, MA, he was a son of Samuel H. Matson and the late Elizabeth (Campbell) Matson.

Donnie was educated at Kent Center School and was a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. He was a stellar athlete at both schools, and is listed for his high school pitching talents in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Kent First Selectman Bruce Adams, former teacher and coach at Kent Center and HVRHS, recalls Donnie as “one of the best natural athletes I have ever coached.”
Baseball and fishing were two of his favorite activities.

Self-employed, Donnie was the “go to” man for any type of skilled labor, and was a particularly superb roofer. News of his death on Facebook sparked many comments about Donnie’s compassion and helpfulness to anyone in need.

In addition to his father of Newport, New Hampshire, Donnie is survived by his brother Kenneth Matson and his wife Victoria, as well as his sister, Marjorie Matson, all of Bantam; two nephews, David Matson and Jacob Finch; and five nieces, Stephanie Fink, Christina Gagnon, Rebecca Litwin, Allison Finch and Samantha Finch.

A Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Bridge Street in Kent on Thursday, June 8 at 11 a.m., with burial following at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Flanders, Kent.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Donnie’s memory to the Kent Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 355, Kent CT 06757.
