Obituary for Gerd W. Sandrib

Harwinton - Gerd Sandrib (88) died peacefully at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital on April 24. Gerd was born in Kvinesdal, Norway, the daughter of Olav and Emma Fjotland. After her childhood in Norway, she met her husband Peter in Brooklyn, NY. They lived in Franklin Square, NY for over 30 years raising their 2 children. After retirement Gerd and her husband moved to Harwinton to be close to their 6 grandchildren.

Gerd was accomplished in needlecrafts, especially using Norwegian designs. She won numerous awards at town fairs, and for many years sold her needle work and weaving at craft fairs in NY and CT. Her grandchildren possess many of her finest knitted sweaters. Her creativity was also displayed in her many flower gardens, cooking and baking. Besides being an extraordinary mother and grandmother, Gerd cared for her daughter for many years during her illness, as well as care giving for her husband in recent years. Gerd was an active member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, and especially enjoyed being a member of the Sewing Group, which she attended weekly. She also was a greeter and member of the altar guild. For many years Gerd regularly volunteered at the soup kitchen at Trinity Episcopal Church in Torrington.

Besides her loving husband Peter, she is survived by her son Richard and his wife Jeanne, her daughter June Murli and six grandchildren Peter, Brian, Eric, and Meghan Sandrib and Robert and Craig Murli. She is also survived by three brothers Thomas, Tormod and Odd.

Funeral services will be held at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 837 Charles Street, Torrington, CT 06790 on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11am. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, 76 Walnut Street, Torrington, CT 06790. There will be no calling hours.
