Obituary for Elena Sokolow

Elena Sokolow
Elena A. Sokolow, 86, of Harwinton, passed away on April 14, 2017 after a brief illness. She was born on June 24, 1930 in Lithuania and moved to Germany after World War II. There she met and married her husband, George, and in 1950 they emigrated to the United States. They moved to Harwinton in 1965 to raise their growing family.
Elena and George were dedicated to raising their 10 children. Many weekends were spend visiting her sister Ann and her family, with the cousins all playing together. In 2014, Elena was visited by her niece, Vaida, of Lithuania, and Vaida’s son Kestutis with his wife. Elena had corresponded with Vaida over many years and they had an emotional and memorable visit.
Elena had a great passion for gardening, and she and George enjoyed working on their property, surrounding their home with lovely trees, shrubs, and gardens. Each winter and spring, Elena poured through seed and plant catalogues, looking to see “what’s new” and what to plant each year. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, creating afghans and blankets for her children and grandchildren. Elena was generous by nature, loved to laugh, and made friends easily.
Elena is predeceased by her husband, George, with whom she spent 66 happily married years. She is survived by her sister, Ann Thomas of Terryville, a sister Jane of Lithuania, and by several nieces and nephews. Elena is survived by her 10 children, her son Eugene and his wife Susan of Norfolk, her sons John and Michael of Warner, New Hampshire, her daughter Anna Reynolds and her husband Robert of Harwinton, her son Alexander and his wife Suzanne of Killingworth, a son Steven and daughters Kathy and Vera of Harwinton, a son Victor and his wife Theresa of Bristol, and a son David and his wife Kathy of Lyme. Elena is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Eric Sokolow, Robert and Alison Reynolds, Katelyn and Brandon Steeves, Ethan Castonguay, Skyler Barrows, and Alex and Genevieve Sokolow.
There will be a private service, with Rowe Funeral Home in Litchfield handling arrangements.
