Obituary for Arthur Benjamin Webster Jr.

Litchfield
Lifelong Litchfield Farmer

Arthur Benjamin Webster Jr., a life-long resident of Litchfield, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in his home on October 25, 2016 surrounded by his family. His wife of sixty years, Lillian (Fredsall), of Harwinton preceded him in death in 2005. Art was born August 11, 1920, the third son to A. Benjamin and Wilhelmina (Karl) Webster. His two older brothers, Karl and Wilbur, pre-deceased him.
Art was educated in Litchfield schools and at the University of New Hampshire. After Art married Lillian in his mid-twenties, his father made him a partner in the family business, Arethusa Farm. Together they improved the Guernsey herd, milked, bottled and delivered their milk and cream throughout Litchfield, Morris, Bantam and Milton. He loved keeping a watchful eye on the town while delivering and many Litchfield youth grew up on Arethusa milk.
By 1980, when profitable family dairy farming was becoming increasingly difficult, the farm was sold. Art then became the Connecticut agricultural inspector for Litchfield Mutual Insurance Company. Inspecting properties across the state for almost twenty years, he took pleasure in visiting with farmers and staying involved with agriculture.
Art was an active member of the Litchfield Congregational Church, the Lions Club and Rotary, the Litchfield Wetlands Commission and was treasurer of the Torrington Soup Kitchen. He manned the information booth on the Green on Monday afternoons well into his nineties. He had also served on the board of directors at both First National Bank of Litchfield and Litchfield Mutual Insurance Company. He read the paper daily and did the Sudoku. An avid bridge player, he enjoyed his last game a week and a half before he died.
He is survived by daughter Jane Fulton and husband Bob of Columbia, Pennsylvania; son Arthur Benjamin Webster III and wife Cornelia of New Marlborough, Massachusetts; daughter Jean Dale and husband Greg of Litchfield; by four granddaughters, Wenonah Palmer, Julie Downing, Sarah Johnson and Abby Webster; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his long-time family friend Louise Waters who was his companion for the last ten years.
His ubiquitous presence, warm smile and ever-positive disposition will be greatly missed in Litchfield.
A service celebrating Art’s life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Litchfield on Saturday October 29th at 11:00am followed by a reception at the church. Calling hours will be held at Rowe Funeral Home on Friday October 28th 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in Art Webster’s memory to the First Congregational Church of Litchfield or to the Meetinghouse Preservation Fund of the church.
