Obituary for Dorothy Anderson

Dorothy Anderson
Dorothy Rochon Anderson, 85, of Litchfield, Connecticut, entered peaceful rest on December 28, 2016.
The former financial director and business manager of Rumsey Hall School in Washington, Connecticut, she is fondly remembered for her warm, generous love of people and her smart, effective leadership skills.
Dorothy was born on August 6th, 1931, in Waterbury, CT. Her father, Philip Rochon, was the comptroller of the Waterbury Clock Company, which became part of the Timex Corporation. Her mother, Dorothy Thompson Rochon, was a homemaker. Dorothy’s younger sister, Carol Kavanaugh, of Parrish, Florida, passed away in May of 2016. In addition to her parents and sister, Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 37 years, John Russell Anderson, who passed away in July of 2010.
Two weeks after graduating with honors in 1949 from Wilby High School in Waterbury, Dorothy joined the staff of Rumsey Hall as a secretary and dorm mistress. Her ingenuity, hard work, and dedication to the success of the school vaulted her to positions of leadership, including membership on the Board of Trustees. Rumsey Hall is honoring Dorothy’s superb 45 year career by naming its brand-new administration building after her.
As a devoted member of The First Congregational Church of Litchfield for over 30 years, Dorothy demonstrated her loving commitment to the welfare of others in many powerful ways. Perhaps most memorable was her creation of a church committee called HOPE (“Helping Other People”). For many years, Dorothy spearheaded its mission to deliver food to needy families in the greater Litchfield community and to provide stuffed animals to children in hospitals, orphanages, and homeless shelters across the country, and even to storm and war-ravaged regions around the world. In recognition of her efforts, Dorothy was named Citizen of the Year in 2006 by the Litchfield Grange.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Ida Lorstad, Kelly Anderson, and Diane Anderson; her step-daughter Robin Karp and her husband Steven; her step-son Reif Anderson and his fiancee Betty Carr; by six grandchildren; and by eight nieces and nephews.
