Obituary for Earl "Jack" E. Iffland Jr.

Earl "Jack"  E.  Iffland Jr.
Earl E. “Jack” Iffland, Jr., 87, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

Born in Torrington, on Nov. 16, 1926, he was the son of the late Earl E. Sr. and Daisy (Exner) Iffland.

Jack graduated from Torrington High School, Class of ’44, and attended UConn at Storrs. He worked his entire life for the family business, Iffland Lumber Company in Torrington, where he served as President for many years.

Jack had a love for animals, airplanes, cars, water skiing and his garden. He enjoyed time spent with his friends and looked forward to daily trips to the donut shop. He especially loved UConn basketball and his many cats which he lovingly cared for.

He was a member of the Model Airplane Club and Laurel Water Ski Club where he set up the ski jump and set the measuring gauges for the tournaments.

Jack was very active in the Masons. His Masonic career spanned better than 65 years. He became a Master Mason joining Seneca Lodge #55 A.F. & A.M. on March 1, 1949. Jack was also very involved with the area youth’s and Torrington’s Ionic Chapter Order of Demolay. He received the prestigious Chevalier Degree in the 1950’s. He was also a member of Cyrus-Meridian Chapter #15, R.A.M., Buel Council #20, R.&S.M. and Clark Commandery, Knights Templar of Waterbury in the York Rite Bodies. A Scottish Rite member of Lafayette Consistory, as well as a Shriner and Sphinx Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. he also worked with the Artificers Degree Team.

Jack is survived by a brother, Thomas Iffland and wife, Doramae, of Torrington; two sisters, Kathleen Vander Eyk and husband, Louis, of Prospect and Elizabeth Maynard and husband, Wesley, of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Dorothy Gardner, predeceased him.

The family wants to say a grateful thanks to the New Britain Hospital for Special Care for their years of loving care and special concerns they gave to Jack throughout his long illness. Doctor Scalise, Peggy, and so many nurses, aide and therapists were like family to him and his family. They would also like to thank his home care nurses; Sue, Judy, Shannon, Kristy and his long time friend, Sandy.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Center Congregational Church, 155 Main Street, Torrington. Please meet directly at church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road (Rte. 202), Litchfield, with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.
